I had the same thoughts when a friend of mine suggested visiting Restoran Umikoi (also known as Restoran Patin Tempoyak Claypot Koi), located in Kampung Losong, Kuala Terengganu. The Patin Masak Tempoyak here is delicious, he said.
At first, I was a little hesitant about his statement. However, since I was in Kuala Terengganu at the time, I set aside my doubts to try the dish, which has been my favorite for a long time.
I thought, why not give it a try? If it doesn’t suit my taste, I’ll just leave it. Maybe others would say it’s delicious. And if it’s really delicious like they said, I can write a review on my blog. At the very least, I can help promote the restaurant. It hopefully can facilitate fans of Patin Masak Tempoyak in Kuala Terengganu to find and try a delicious Patin Masak Tempoyak restaurant in Kuala Terengganu.
So I paid a visit to Restoran Umikoi and the Patin Masak Tempoyak became my lunch that day.
Delicious! I like it!
Of course, if you compare it to Patin Masak Tempoyak served by those legendary restaurants in Temerloh, It will never be the same. But for a restaurant that serves Patin Masak Tempoyak outside of Temerloh, this restaurant is good enough for me. Out of 10, I would rate it a 7.
The taste is good, just nice! The sauce is not too thick and not too thin. The spiciness is just nice too! I ate it with relish. What makes it more special, this restaurant serves Patin Masak Tempoyak in a clay pot. It’s a bit rare for me.
However, in my opinion, there are two shortcomings. First, the chili is not finely mashed. This is a big no-no for me. No matter what dish, if there is the chili that is not finely mashed, I will complain. The second one is that, for me, if the tempoyak flavor is increased a bit, it will enhance the taste.
But these are just my minor comments. This is based on my taste. Others may have different tastes. I mention it here because I am the one who tastes it and I am the one who gives the review. So it should reflect my taste.
In terms of price, it’s standard. RM12 for one piece. The price is the same for the head, body, and tail parts. The price is okay. Not expensive for this standard of taste.
This is a photo of my Patin Masak Tempoyak head. I am a fan of Patin’s head part. Most of the time, If I were to eat this dish, I would definitely choose the head part. I rarely take the body or tail part.
Why? Because the head has a special taste of fat, it contains more fat, especially in the lower stomach of the Patin. That’s what makes Patin’s head delicious and different from other parts.
That’s my comment and review for the Restoran Umikoi. If you want to come here, I definitely recommend it. It’s worth your money. Bring your family to have lunch here. Don’t worry about parking because there are a lot of available parking spaces here.
