Special doa for travel! To those who already know, consider this as a revision. To the uninitiated, this is new knowledge for you. If possible please memorize this doa (prayer).
Islam is a comprehensive religion. Its teachings cover all aspects of life. Not just in specific worship, but in anything that its followers do, Islam has rules and ways.
For example, in travel matters. Islam has guidelines about it. One of them is the traveler’s doa/prayer. It is a special doa for travel that Muslims recite at the beginning of travel. It is a recommended doa for Muslims to be recited before starting a journey.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) practiced this doa/prayer before starting or on a trip and encouraged his followers to do the same.
Therefore, doa for travel is considered a sunnah. If done, we will receive a reward. However, if we do not practice it, it will not incur any sins. This shows how strongly our Prophet loves us.
Hadith about prayer or doa for travel
There are a few doa/prayers Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us relating to travel. One of them are as follows:

From Ibn Umar, he said:
،أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا اسْتَوَى عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ خَارِجًا إِلَى سَفَرٍ
، كَبَّرَ ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا
، وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ
،اللهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى
،وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى، اللهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا
،وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ، اللهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ
،وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ، اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ
.وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ، وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ
“The Prophet (saw) when he sits on his mount with the intention of traveling, he will recite takbir (Allah is Great) three times (Allah is Great! Allah is Great! Allah is Great!) Holy is the Lord who has made this vehicle easy for us, while we were not able to control it before. And truly, to God, we will return.
O, Allah! We seek Your help in making this journey for the sake of righteousness and piety, and may it be considered as act that You approve. O, Allah! We seek Your help in making this journey easy for us and shortening the distance for us. O, Allah! You are our companion during the journey and the guardian of our families (left behind). O, Allah! I seek refuge in You from the difficulties of travel, unpleasant sights, and the return in a bad state with regard to our wealth and families.” [Muslim 1342].
Imam al-Nawawi said: “This hadith shows that it is recommended to begin a journey by reciting this prayer, doa for travel. And there are many other supplications and prayers related to travel that I have collected in the book al-Azkar. The meaning of “وعثاء” is difficulty and hardship. While “كآبة” means a change in someone’s state to sadness or something similar and the meaning of “المنقلب” is a change (for the worse in terms of wealth and family).” [See: al-Minhaj Syarah Sahih Muslim, 111/9]
Doa for travel, peace of mind in a journey
When we travel, we do not know what difficulties we will face. We also worry about the wealth and family we leave behind. So we pray that Allah will make our journey easy and we ask Allah to protect our wealth and family.
Hopefully, if a servant recites this prayer, Allah will protect him from any difficulties and hardships. In addition, Allah will keep him away from things that are sad.
Therefore, let us all practice this prayer before starting our journey, because it contains the cries of a servant to Allah to always take care of what he has left behind and what is separated because of this journey, especially his family and wealth.
